The resulting split by these two bands could almost qualify as a collaboration of sorts. Though the two sides of the record are both the independent product of each group, the record has a unified mission. Together they have forged a singular statement of pathos and redemption, beauty and menace.

Science fiction has evolved out of a human desire to know the hidden possibilities of
our continued existence moving into the dimly lit territories of the future. Using what
they know of our history as a spring board for our speculation, and by examining the
predictive signs of current environment, visionary writers have cast light on our
possible future whereabouts, and in the process given form and direction to that course
through a creative process of divination. In some ways, Pyramids self titled debut has
accomplished the same feat in the realm of musical prognostication. While the album
was certainly built on a knowledge of past musical forms, the combination of that
knowledge with an uncanny ability to twist old energies into entirely new shapes,
they've created a truly predictive and compelling sculpture of sound and aural color.
Now, several years since its initial release, Pyramids first collection of songs resounds
like a communique from a far off galaxy. It could be the music made by Martian
interpreters who somehow intercepted and reconfigured the decaying din emanating
from the charred surface of Planet Earth. The resultant impressions sound like cut up
feverdream tape loops containing snippets of Xasthur, Tangerine Dream and Mazzy
Star layered over, under and through each other. The aural pictures are at once
terrifying and soothing, familiar and wholly alien. What seems like it shouldn't does in
fact work: black metal blasting stitched together with patches of gauzy melody and
angelic warbling. It's one of the most enveloping and simultaneously disorienting
documents to have emerged from the hazy outer territories of the heavy music
underground in years. Despite the numerous musical mutations that have sprung up
around it since its initial release, Pyramids debut still sounds far beyond the horizons
of anything concocted by modern musical scientists. Perhaps through a process of
reversed time flow, Pyramids have brought the sounds of the future into our present
moment, speculative fiction in aural form. It's hard to say whether we should be
reassured or terrified by their findings, but it's safe to say adventurous listeners can't
afford to ignore prophetic visions such as these.

When I heard this record I felt like I was hearing something perfect. Every note and change and harmony makes sense and resonates within me. I wish Mare would make another record someday. I also wish I could sing like Tyler, and I also wish I could play drums like Caleb. I heard that Tyler had a toothbrush in his back pocket while they were playing in Toronto...what can I say?

This is one of the saddest and most lonely records I have ever heard, sad and lonely without being dramatic. It sounds very honest, like a twisted version of Fovea Hex. I really appreciate the space the music has, and the time period and personalities of the musicians the recording captures. You can appreciate James Plotkin's exceptional hearing and mastering skills. I tried to make a funny joke about Jodis, but you CANT joke about Jodis, and everyone knows that. This record deflects joking.

When I heard this record I was walking in the rain, it was before the record came out (thanks HHR!). I was listening to it on broken ipod headphones. I listened to it with two bi-polar manic depressives in my car driving in traffic, and all these times I only noticed the music. This is an amazing record. I think this is the most "listened to" record for me of 2009. This record is also not really funny or joke-able.

This record is so fucking awesome, it sounds haunted and it sounds like a bunch of guys were trapped in a recording studio in Salem during a snow storm. In my dream world if I was a dude and I could growl and yell really loud and play electric guitar like I just couldn't stop being influenced by The Dead Man soundtrack, then I would be in this band and I would play live shows and be tired and sweaty afterward. I REALLY wish Old Man Gloom would make some more records...I heard they are going to soon...just saying.

I don't even need to describe to you my excuse for loving this record. But there are so many good things you can do while listening to Khanate. You can drink coffee early in the morning with your Khanate mug, you can cut the sleeves off of your Khanate shirt and go hiking in the mountains, you can sharpen the Khanate hunting knife you have near your bed while living in the woods, you can drown out your roommates irritating folk music by listening to Khanate really loud, you can appreciate James Plotkin's exceptional hearing and mastering skills, and you can play with your cat by dragging him around with an afghan on the floor while you both listen to Khanate.
Pyramids (hydra head records) provided each of the 52 artists participating in the project four different audio clips – not so much a song, but four separate, cooperating textures. each artist was asked to create an entirely new piece of music incorporating what they wished from the provided sounds, whatever techniques they wanted to employ,and whatever additions they wished to make. wvndrkmmer contains 52 tracks from 52 different artists on 5 cassettes with a total run time over 6 hours. the total edition is 300 copies – 100 copies of the ‘red’ edition and 200 of the ‘black’ edition. the ‘red’ copies will go to the first 100 preorders.
