Rejecting Technology Since 1995

We've written a lot about this band over the years (many years - they've been around for, like, 20!). Here's a quote: "Oxbow have always languished in relative obscurity here in the US when they really deserve to be ruling the whole damn world. Essential, intense, heavy, dark, weird, artful, aggressive, fucked genius with few peers."

The most noticeable characteristic of the EP is the settling of the group back into their indie roots. Having come full circle from an underground mainstay to a major label up-and-comer and back again, Cave In seems revitalized (rather than defeated) by their travels. Planets of Old finds the band sticking with their native label Hydra Head, which includes the perks of simple yet thematic artwork from musician/label guru Aaron Turner. In true independent fashion, the band offers the entire album available for streaming, and provides little fanfare on their MySpace to promote the release other than the music itself. Thankfully, the band puts together an EP that is not only a welcome respite after four years of silence, but an intriguing glimpse of what may come next.

You may or may not know who either of the people pictured are, but the freakish pairing you'll see after the jump is truly a sight to behold. Steve Agee is a comedian/actor/writer from the Sarah Silverman-Jimmy Kimmelcircle of Hollywood. He's been a writer for Kimmel and "The Andy Milonakis Show," and he was in Silverman's movie and Comedy Central TV series. He's also enormous. Mia Matsumiya is a violinist. She's a member of the band Kayo Dot.

"The first two minutes of 'Gnosis: Part 1,' would not sound out of place on an Einsturzende Neubauten album, but from the two minute mark on the track is pure doom metal. The guitars cut and slash in horrible slow motion, long sustained chords that grate against subtle, barely-there drumming, complimenting a vocalist choking on every anguished scream, akin to Abbath if he was recorded drowning in the bottom of an infinitely deep well."
