Summer's almost over, school is back in session, and you are pissed that you have to start wearing sleeves again. Well, cool your jets, because we have a trio of Pre-Orders for BOTCH,DAUGHTERS, and JESU records that belong on your shelf.

Botch We are the Romans cover
BOTCH
We Are the Romans
2xLP

Unless you've been living under a rock that's underneath another even bigger rock in a cave in the middle of nowhere, you probably already know what's up with this milestone of an album. Initially released in the year two grand, Botch's final full-length was/is the kind of devastating metallic hardcore explosion that the term "metallic hardcore" could/can only aspire to. In fact, these dudes nailed it so hard that the bands that came afterward had to start calling themselves "metalcore" out of respect.

All BOTCH CDs and DVDs on sale for only $5 during the Pre-Order!

DAUGHTERS

Daughters' s/t is the kind of record you can't stop turning up. The kind that satisfies every cultural, musical requisite a critical listener possesses while simultaneously reinventing the wheel. The kind that's so immediately gratifying that you don't even bother to compare your instincts with what today's internet has to say. The kind you won't have to remove from your record player for months on end.

JESU
Everyday I Get Closer to the Light From Which I Came
LP

Beginning with 'Homesick', with its guitar hooks, shoegaze textures and familiar jesusound, one can be misled into considering that this new album will follow a familiarjesu trajectory. Instead the following tracks use jesu's aesthetic, but take in dub, post punk, and electronica along the way, to create maybe the most dynamic jesu album to date.

Hydra Head alumni, HELMS ALEE, are holding a pre-sale for their upcoming third full-length, Sleepwalking Sailors, to be released by their own record label, Rolf Neslund, in fall 2013.

They chose Kickstarter to raise money for recording, manufacturing, etc.
Help play a part in the release - you have until Monday April 22nd to pre-order the vinyl (and more!) here.
Pre-sale vinyl comes with a limited edition hand silk screened cover.

If nothing else, the video is worth a laugh.

now available for pre-order in the Hydra Head Shop at Blue Collar Distro.

Converge 2xLP
CONVERGE
Caring & Killing: The Early Years 1991-1994
2xLP, Zip Hoodie, T-Shirt

- First time on vinyl ever!
- Converge's early recordings finally available again after being out of print for years.
- New audio mastered by Alan Douches.
- Packaging designed by Jacob Bannon with artwork by Aaron Turner.
- 2xLP in gatefold sleeve with 3 different colored vinyl versions.

For anyone remotely familiar with the heavy music underground of the last two decades, Converge needs no introduction. They are  recognized as one of the most ferociously consistent, challenging and influential bands within and beyond their realm. Like other long-running institutions Neurosis, Sonic Youth, The Melvins, or Fugazi, Converge was born from the wellspring of punk and hardcore, quickly mutating into something all together different - an aural beast of their own design.  Their sound has since fluctuated and evolved over a long and industrious career, but even in their earliest days the hallmarks of their sound were there - whiplash dynamics, floor-stomping breakdowns, brittle heart-rending melodies and a torrential sense of momentum.

The collection of Caring & Killing captures Converge in their formative years, spanning the timeframe of 1991-1994 . This period was extremely productive for the band, generating the debut full length Halo in a Haystack, a slew of compilation appearances and split EPs, as well as multiple demo sessions. The resultant tracks were unpredictable - rageful and delicate, catchy and obtuse. Despite the harsh juxtaposition of opposing elements, it was clear Converge possessed the will and the wit to construct cohesive songs from the maelstrom, ones that proved to be powerfully charismatic in their idiosyncratic nature.  These early anthems are certainly more ungainly than those of present day Converge , but they burn with the same vitality and punishing drive for which the band is known and loved. These incendiary sermons are as utterly convincing now as upon the day of their first iteration, and from them a cult was born.

Discordance Axis 2xLPDISCORDANCE AXIS
Jouhou
2xLP, Ltd. T-shirt

The mid-1990s were a pretty bleak period for grindcore. The genre's progenitors had either retired into their dotage or were aimlessly wallowing in creative bankruptcy.

A change was needed, and New Jersey upstarts Discordance Axis were about to upend 15 years of grindcore tradition and  establish the template for 21st Century extremity. Where first album Ulterior owed obvious debts to their musical forerunners,Discordance Axis found their unique voice on 1997's Jouhou (Japanese for "Information"), turning in 18 minutes of sleek, cyberpunked grind that directly addressed human frailty and emotions rather than recycling the same political jeremiads and empty slogans.

Unlike the first wave of grind, which owed obvious debts to '80s hardcore, Discordance Axissounded fresh and modern, buoyed by guitarist Rob Marton's forward thinking playing, which melded fleet-fingered technique with streamlined, pinpoint aggression. Marton was influenced as much by Voivod as he was by Napalm Death, and he was one of the few grindcore guitarist whose compositions revolved around actual riffs that were driven by Dave Witte's frenetic, pinpoint drumming. Added to that, Jon Chang introduced a whole new lexicon that appropriated themes and images from manga, science fiction and cartoons and turned them into metaphors for loss, loneliness and alienation, topics that grindcore had never seriously addressed. Together, the trio were the first to make a bid for grindcore as a capital-A Art form. There was more to their blastbeating than a bunch of kids mouthing off at the world.

DROWNINGMAN - Busy Signal at the Suicide Hotline is being re-pressed on vinyl LP. It will be available on Black, Clear, and Black/Yellow split vinyl, and housed in the last remaining jackets from the original pressing. There is also a limited edition shirt that will only be printed once as part of this pre-order.

PRE-ORDER Drowningman - Busy Signal at the Suicide Hotline vinyl LP

PRE-ORDER Drowningman: Busy Signal Limited Edition T-Shirt

We thought Drowningman's debut would be best described and contextualized by one of their peers. With that in mind here's some words on the subject by Roderic Mounir, drummer extraordinaire from Swiss math-metal wizards and fellow Hydra Head alumni Knut:

"Remember, this was year 1998 when so many great bands put out incredible releases: Converge When Forever Comes Crashing, Cave In Until Your Heart Stops, Botch American Nervoso, Isis Mosquito Control EP, Refused The Shape of Punk to Come, etc. Those were exciting times for the realm of heavy underground music. A seemingly lesser-known act, Drowningman, came up that year with a moniker and a sound that brought to mind the pioneers of chaotic metallic hardcore, Deadguy. Rising from Burlington, Vermont, they rocked in an even tighter fashion and would play even further the superlong-witty-song-title game. The album itself was presented under a semi passable (but ultimately memorable) B-movie title, Busy Signal at the Suicide Hotline.

That however wasn't the most important facet of the album- the music was: Drowningman fired on all cylinders, fusing hardcore-punk, noisecore, math-rock, metal and even indie-pop. Yes, they were the only band that could jump from a shredding metalcore part to a pretty singy-songy chorus without sounding like a preppy emo band - long before this became a fashionable (and marketable) formula. With a singer as capable as Simon Brody, you'd wonder why they wouldn't give it a shot. It worked. Most of all, the guitarists had so many great riffs under their belts - viciously discordant, blatantly rocking, anthemic, you name it, and to top it off a drummer that possessed enough versatility and musicality in his grooves to make it flow effortlessly.

Listen to opener ‘Condoning The Use Of Inhalants’: it clocks in at just under three minutes, but by the time it reaches the 2:30 mark, the band has already gone through five different riffs at least, and just as many tempo shifts, seamlessly. Drowningman were a lesson in songcraft just as much as they were in extremity. A lesson those lucky enough to cross their path undoubtedly retained."

OLD MAN GLOOM - NO
2xLP/CD/Cassette/t-shirt/ladies t-shirt/longsleeve/hoodie
Available for pre-order now!

We would write a rambling, somewhat entertaining blurb about how great the record is, and too bad you weren't at the shows to get it early (neither were we), or even if you were you didn't get the limited pre-order exclusive shirt/hoodie, and how it will be hilarious when someone asks if you've listened to any good records lately and you shout "NO!" with all the force of a sentient simian research scientist seeking sonic solutions to somnolent sedentary styles of living through voluble auditory vocal projection (not unlike that practiced by Institute Researchers Aaron Turner, Caleb Scofield, and Nate Newton in recent field experiments), thus confusing and alarming your inquirer and leading to potential future awkward social engagements, but we figure you don't have time to read another run-on sentenced blog post from us when you could be carving your place amongst the chosen few who will have the new OLD MAN GLOOM album in all of it's quaking glory upon it's official release date (June 26th), along with items of clothing that will only be produced prior to the release, and thereafter unavailable for purchase, making your wardrobe the envy of those slower and less attentive to our various information outlets who also appreciate the strange, humbling, deafening heaviness of OMG, and who probably didn't get one of the limited vinyl colors because they dilly dallied on their way to the Hydra Head Shop to order the 2xLP, maybe to read another article on the internet about bizarre undersea creatures caught on robotic cameras, or a blog post written for the amusement of the few obsessive computer addicts who feel obligated to keep up to date on every word posted to the sites they follow (count some of us in this camp). No, we thought we would keep this short so you can be sure to get your opposable thumbs on the new OLD MAN GLOOM record, NO, on whichever color of whichever format you prefer before they are gone, along with one (or all) of the associated clothing options.

June 21st sees the official release of Helms Alee's sophomore album, Weatherhead, but you can order it now and grab a kick ass exclusive shirt while you are at it.  As the proper follow-up to Night Terror, this album is amazing in its craftsmanship.  You can catch the lead off jammer, "Elbow Grease", here.

The 2xLP comes in three different vinyl colors.  Click here to order.  The CD is available here.

As part of the preorder, we have made available a full color version of the already classic "beavis & butthead" shirt design, brought to you by our very own Sugarbear (A.C.) .  The print is on a heather grey shirt and wont be available after the preorder passes. Get that ish here.

"Small Turn airs its grievances to the tune of near-funereal doom metal; tempos crawl, chords hang in the air like stink, riffs unfurl over many minutes, and frontman Creston Spiers' yowl reaches untold heights of lowness." - Pitchfork

"The band's seventh album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness, plays like one long metallic dirge, which chronicles a broken man, his broken relationship and the doubt of grace... A Small Turn of Human Kindness marks somewhat of a return to Harvey Milk's weirdest and challenging music, but with every release, Harvey Milk has brought its disparate sonic worlds closer together." - NPR

"Singular and Absorbing" - Dusted Magazine

* Record Store Day

You can now pre-order the Floor Sight & Seen 2xDVD (Chunklet) from our webstore! Here's Chunklet's description:

After years of toiling away in obscurity, followed by years of escalating interest during their hiatus, the legendary Florida band Floor reunited for a handful of shows in April 2010.  Three different drummers.  Three different sets.  Over two hours of material spanning their early dirgey/noise singles to their landmark psych/drone/pop self-titled masterpiece.  Filmed over two nights at the EARL in Atlanta, Georgia.  "Sight & Seen" is truly something that needs to be seen to be believed.
A multi-camera performance coupled with professionally recorded and mixed audio, "Sight & Seen" is an enveloping, droning wall of guitars.  Floor's two guitarists, Anthony Vialon and Steve Brooks (of TORCHE fame), spend over two hours on stage with their various drummers.  Their three drummers, Betty, Jeff and Henry, rotate through the band's lineup: crashing through their early singles, smoking the viewer with their mid-period haze and ending with the cathartic and anthemic final album.

Disc #1 of "Sight & Seen" also includes a 20 minute featurette that documents the band's history with never-before-seen live footage, photography and interviews.
Disc #2 is intended to lure in both massive fans and completists alike.  A data disc (which means you pop it in your computer), includes:
High quality audio files of both Atlanta shows (not just the one shown on disc #1)
- the complete and edited film of Floor that ended up on the cutting room floor (which clocks in at over 2 hours of video)

And in addition to this, the band has opened up their video vaults to include:
  • over an hour of archival footage spanning Floor's career from 1993 at Churchill's in Miami to their final shows in 2002.
"Sight & Seen" is also housed in an elegant package which was initially used on Chunklet's landmark "Anthem" 2xDVD release by Harvey Milk in 2006.  All designed by Chunklet's in-house designer, Henry H. Owings.
