10 out of 10 review for "Backsliders and Apostates Will Burn" in New Decibel Issue out now!
"This is just unbelievably innovative and catchy music. Songs stick to your ribs and repeat in your head until you snag another chance to hear them... This record, taken as four songs written by who gives a shit and recorded in nowhere USA, allows everyone who yaps about the lack of truly original music to take a couple listens and then shut the fuck up."

The most recent press release was this bit from Hydra Head: "Three years after they released their debut full length, the Austerity Program are back with not even twenty minutes of music -- a four-song EP. You are not us, their label and so you have no idea how much this absolutely infuriates us. We have probably been on the phone with these guys averaging at least once a week over that time. 'Guys, guys, we have invested a lot of money in you, when are you going to come out with something?'"

Between 1992 and 1998, very few people outside Georgia knew about Harvey Milk. The band packed it in just after hiring a new and monstrous drummer, Kyle Spence, and just before a band could get international traction by putting a demo on myspace. I never heard Note 1.
In the following years, some of its earlier music was re-released on CD. When Harvey Milk’s music became easy to find, the band re-formed in 2006, with the original drummer, Paul Trudeau. I completely missed “Special Wishes,” the first post-reformation album. I heard “Life ... the Best Game in Town,” from 2008, with Mr. Spence back on drums, and felt nothing. I didn’t like the artless moan of Creston Spiers, the singer and guitarist. And sometimes the music — slow, rumbling, wayward — reminded me of the Melvins, who try my patience.

The very essence of Harvey Milk, as exemplified by Stephen Tanner
Since Henry Owings already told us why Harvey Milk rules, we figured we’d open the floor to drummer Kyle Spence and bassist/kick-ass cook Stephen Tanner. In the following post, they give us a brutally-honest beginner’s guide to their entire discography, from the rubber-burning ZZ Top nods of The Pleaserto their “most pretentious” LP yet, this spring’s A Small Turn of Human Kindness. Our favorite line from a story that’s full of ‘em: “This record is pretty great except for the performances and the sound of all the instruments.” Oh, and this: “So fuck you. At least it’s better than Tortoise.”

Dilapidated warehouse, makeshift stage, loud-as-fuck sound system, cheap booze and weed smoke everywhere, hundreds of sweaty, crazy motherfuckers going insane as the band-members gyrate about on stage and come into the audience, because really there’s barely any separation between stage and floor. That’s what I want it to be like the first time I see post-punk / metal explosion outfit Daughters live (yes, I know they’ve been around for years). Based on this here new track “The Theatre Goer” I can tell that these dudes put on really fucking intense shows, and withthe sudden absence of These Arms are Snakes in all of our lives I really need a band to fill that void.
Daughters comes out on March 9th via Hydra Head. Pre-order it here.

From Hydra Head Records (,but not really):
Three years after they released their debut full length, The Austerity Program are back with not even twenty minutes of music - a four song EP. You are not us, their label, and so you have no idea how much this absolutely infuriates us. We have probably been on the phone with these guys averaging at least once a week over that time. "Guys, guys, we have invested a LOT of money in you, when are you going to come out with something?"
And they fucking promised us like a triple LP or something. And then, three goddam years later, we get this. That's like, just over a song a year. And not a 45 minute, seven part epic song. These things are barely five minutes each. You could probably learn to play them over a long afternoon.
What the hell did we do? We run a record label - it's not like we're dumping toxic waste in playgrounds or laying off thousands of people who work in our factory or anything. This is small potatoes. So why the hell are we punished like this? And of course - of course - we're suddenly expected to drop everything because now they've got a record release show lined up and "it's very important that we have all formats available the night of the show." It's like, I...
I really don't even know what to type I'm so angry about this. I just had to walk away from the computer and get a glass of water to calm down. This is ridiculous.
What does it sound like? You tell us, man. We haven't even cracked open the reference copies because what's the point? Any schedule we made about this thing died literally years ago. If it's anything like their last record (and they claim that it is, but "so much better" - whatever, guys) it'll have a drum machine and some guitars and bass and that one guy will be singing and can I just tell you how pissed I am that I am even stuck writing this thing? Promo materials for something that the band swore up and down was going to be huge and on time. I just want to get a red marker and write "D - , SEE ME" all over the CD copy they sent us and just mail it back to them. No, even better, I want to FED EX it back to them just to make it totally obvious how screwed up they are. Four songs. Just... it's just astonishing that they really think this is their next record.
So, yeah, The Austerity Program finally took some of their precious time and now expect us to put their EP out. Screw this - I'm going to go work on reviewing the layout for the next Torche record or something.

A Small Turn of Human Kindness is as dense and as heavy temperamentally as it is musically. The seven songs so subtly bleed together that the listener has no choice but to view the entire album as a linear orchestration with a singular ebb and flow.... a rising and falling action, refined to hell and back. And so, all of these things lead me to believe that any and all true HARVEY MILK fans will eventually argue this record as the band's finest work. Or at least the vinyl version will become the quintessential mantle-piece for a generation of suburban children slumming it in the inner city... you know who you are!
