HYDRA HEAD RECORDS

Splitting Heads since 1995

There is simply too much music in the world these days, and little of it seems to embody what could be described as passion or even soul. Rarer still are the bands who have stuck around long enough to be considered consistent institutions of musical integrity and ingenuity. All but extinct are the bands that embody/possess the qualities above, and who have continued to produce, evolve and thrive despite deficient attention from the music buying public. While artists like THE MELVINS, NEUROSIS, CONVERGE and ENSLAVED have managed to plumb the depths of the various caverns of heavy metal/hardcore/loud rock and emerged atop mountains of accolades (while simultaneously making careers of their craft), KNUT have long labored in relative obscurity, churning out some of the finest all-enveloping-mathsludge- metal-pummelry known this (or that) side of the Atlantic. 16 years and 12 + releases into their existence KNUT have managed once again to top themselves and shame their peers with the creation of WONDER. A commentary on the human capacity for creative thought and numinous experience in the face of a violent and oppressive global-market ethos, WONDER stands as a testament to our will for survival and defiance in times of adversity and crippling doubt... and, yeah, it's proof-positive that CELTIC FROST and Swatch ain't the only Swiss exports from which we may all reap unending benefits.

Creston Spiers: Excuse me if I seem a little distracted. I’m driving right now, but we can go ahead and do the interview.

Gary Suarez: Okay. Please stay safe.

I will. I’m buckled up.

Great, I appreciate knowing that. I have to say, as someone who’s listened to several Harvey Milk albums, I couldn’t believe how bleak and depressing the new album sounds, especially in contrast with Life . . . the Best Game in Town. Where is this darkness coming from?

Well you’re definitely right, it is a bleak record. It’s pretty much slow and low all the way through. The story that goes along with it is pretty depressing. I think it really comes the fact that I decided from the beginning that I was going to set this story to music. It just has that feel to it. I try, I guess, to make the music match to what’s happening emotionally. It’s a pretty bleak story. I think that all of us, after the last record, wanted to make something that we felt was kind of more like us. This is definitely that. This record is us all the way.

This is very different from records like The Pleaser. There is certainly no “Rock & Roll Party Tonight” on this one.

This record was unique for us in that it was conceived all at one time, and it was written through as a record as opposed to a collection of songs. The music is all one piece. I don’t know if I would say that it was the record that we wanted to make; we intentionally designed to make this really bleak, depressing record. It’s just that that’s what sort of what came out once I decided I was going to write this story. I sort of made the decision on what notes I was going to use, what the flow was going to be like, and what the tone of it was going to be like – it just sort of came out that way. I don’t think it was intentional that we were going to have a record without any rockers on it or any mid-tempo songs on it. It just sort of organically formed that way.

Buddyhead :Now that you’re removed, from writing, recording and being a member of Daughters, and you’ve released a record that many people (myself including) would call your best and the sort of “coming of age” of the band, how does it feel that it’s basically over?

Nick : I have mixed feelings about it. its sad that the band fell apart as this record was being released because I do believe it was a sort of coming of age recording, but that it was only a peek at what was to come. Writing this album felt like a dusting of cobwebs for me and as though we were stepping into a territory that was fresh and exciting for our band; at least that was my goal when i made it. On the other hand, its great to be away from the stresses of the band. Daughters was a band that provided me with some really great memories and took me around the world, helped me make some great friends and allowed me to do what I’ve always wanted to do with my life. I feel extremely grateful to have been able to work together with dudes that I’ve known for a long time in a band I felt had integrity. I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to write and record our last record as I am extremely proud of it, especially in the context and history of the band.

Keelhaul absolutely fucking killed it, their furious Coalesce-on-steroids onslaught leaving me wondering how this band had slipped beneath my radar for so long. - MetalSucks

Unlike so many lesser bands, the Cleveland quartet explores the extremes of heaviness and complexity without skimping on either element. -

Founded in Boston, Isis has been highly influential in the ambient doom-metal scene. The band's slow-moving motifs have become more progressive in recent years, culminating in Isis' fifth and final album,
Wavering Radiant. (The band is breaking up after its current tour.) Like its predecessors, Wavering Radiant is a thematic work, in this case dealing with supernatural planes of existence. Listen to one of the group's last shows, as it plays the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn.

It was just one week ago when Decibel reported that Torche had been robbed of a van load of equipment, merchandise and personal affects after an evening on the road with Coheed & Cambria and Circa Survive. Though the robbery forced the band to miss their Canadian tour dates, they scheduled several dates on the Eastern seaboard and have added two more once their tour reaches its completion on May 29. To see how the band is faring, Decibel headed backstage after their blistering set at the Electric Factory on May 22 and chatted with guitarist and vocalist Steve Brooks, bassist Jonathan Nuñez, drummer Rick Smith and “touring member who hasn’t endured enough beatings to be a full time” guitarist Howard Maxwell Johnston.

The last song you released “King Beef” seemed to have far more drone and industrial influences than (Decibel Album of the Year) Meanderthal. Have you been moving in that direction stylistically?

Steve Brooks: NO. Hahaha. Umm it’s the same. We’ve always been all over the place, we’ll keep doing what we do. Sometimes we’ll do a song like that and sometimes we’ll do just what we’ve been doing. Sometimes some of our songs sound exactly the same.

Jonathan Nuñez: We have an EP coming out in September.

Rick Smith: It’s a bunch of radio rock bullshit.

JN: It’s upbeat rocking stuff. Two long songs on it but its pretty much upbeat. You know, the type of stuff we like playing live.

SB: There is a slow jam on it.
