Jodis: Feature on Noise Creep

Jodis

Chances are, you haven't heard of
Jodis yet. The band features James Plotkin and Tim Wyskida from Khanate and Isis frontman Aaron Turner. The band's new album, 'Secret House,' drops Oct. 27, but isn't for everybody. The music would best be described as moody prog. Plotkin has, himself, described it as "a modern exploration of restrained sonic minimalism and tonal, textural density ... [that] recalls a void, a shore-less pit, a slow nihilistic decent into absolute blankness."

Like we said ... it's not for everybody. And that's cool by Jodis (pronounced Joe-Diss), who're named after a moth found largely in Europe. "I don't make music for anybody other than myself," Plotkin tells Noisecreep. "I play what I like. If other people can catch on to it, that's fine, but if not, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. It's the same thing with the other guys. If we were making music for other reasons, beyond pleasing ourselves, we'd be a lot more successful than we are. Its definitely a selfish, selfish thing for me, making music."

Pyramids with Nadja: Release & Stream Album Today!!!

Release and Stream Debut Album Today on Hydra Head!

Pyramids with Nadja is a massive collaborative effort between Pyramids, Nadja and a number of otherwise established musicians. The instrumentation on this record might be described as an energized ambient, infused with an intelligent ear for avant-garde metal and an almost indiscernible adherence to a sort of pop sensibility. PwN successfully melds the still unparalleled compositional methodology developed in Pyramids' "s/t" album with Nadja's trademarked dirge-like shoegaze. All members of Pyramids (f. coloccia, m. dean, m. kraig, r. loren, d. william) and Nadja (Aidan Baker & Leah Buckereff) perform on all four tracks on the record.

Pyramids with Nadja also features: Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil (performs bass on track one and four), Albin Julius of Der Blutharsch (performs vocals on track four), Chris Simpson of Mineral (performs vocals on track two), Colin Marston of Dysrhythmia and Behold the Arctopus (co-produced/engineered track one) and James Plotkin of Khanate, Khlyst, O.L.D. Phantomsmasher (mixed and mastered the entire album). And if that weren't enough Ulver and Lustmord remixed the track, "Into the Silent Waves," for a limited 12", to be released on Hydra Head early 2010.

Jodis: James Plotkin Interview on Metal Sucks!

plotkin 1

How did Jodis get together?

It was pretty non-eventful, I guess. Me and Tim are always working on stuff, and we came up with a bunch of recordings that we thought were good but sort of needed a third element. I wanted to work with Aaron on something substantial for awhile now, and we decided that vocals were really what the music needed. I figured it would be a really good project to work with him on. We thought about different vocalists that might fit with something like that, and it wasn’t really so easy. There is a distinct lack of vocalists that are willing to experiment these days. We mulled over a few different ideas and then passed the tracks onto him to see if he was interested, and he was. He worked on the tracks from there. It was a pretty casual forming of a band.

Stephen Brodsky Solo Tour!

Announces U.S. Tour Dates w/ Annuals and The Dear Hunter!

The songs have hooks aplenty, and the vocal melodies are simply gorgeous, but many times they are buried under a layer of sludgy, bottom-heavy guitars. This creates an interesting dynamic between the strange, often delicate vocals and the doom metal guitars driving the music along. - Absolutepunk

Like hits of LSD manufactured to pass for Easter candy, the tracks on Stephen Brodsky's third solo album are all big, bright, sweet, and highly hallucinogenic. -

Stephen Brodsky, also known to as: Stove Bredsky, the brains behind Pet Genius, the Stephen Brodsky in Stephen Brodsky's Octave Museum and lead of the groundbreaking metal core/space rock outfit Cave In, is (maybe) coming to a town near you! Please check the dates below to see if the aforementioned statement applies to you, believe me, its worth looking into! Stephen Brodsky's solo exploits are a slice of fried gold! One of the most under-recognized overachievers in contemporary indie music. For most, its an undertaking on first listen because one cannot contain this gentleman's creations in any sort of six sided receptacle, however a discerning listener immediately recognizes the mastery Stephen possesses over his craft.

Chel's List - Eugene S Robinson's novel, Dead Whale "Auk" CD, Isis "Live 5" CD, Lustmord "Beyond" CD, Dan/Cavity postcard set

In this episode, our oafish friend is a bundle of raw nerves. He fears messing up the description for Eugene's novel 'A Long Slow Screw' but is saved by Eugene himself giving a bit of the low down on his book. He says a few words, gleefully offers to sign the first 100 copies "For you to you" and then reads a small excerpt.

Chel is disappointed that he didn't start his brief reading with the line, "Call me Ishmael". (Hell of a segue from Eugene's book to Dead Whale CD's)

Chel's fear escalates when it comes time to describe the new Dead Whale CD 'Auk' Such peaceful and tranquil tracks would lead you to think Dead Whale a frail, awkward club kid. Nope, here's a description of him pulled from a google search. "You’ll be able to spot Ironlung because he’s six foot of man with one foot of black Santa Claus beard." What the description fails to note is the mountain man frame and fists like glazed hams. Fortunately Chel is able to use some adjectives that came straight from Dead Whale himself and only blunders it a little.

Thinking himself safe from catching a beating from the two most dangerous frontmen Chel can think of, he's blindsided by an angry text message from a 3rd frontman, and still hasn't recovered. I'm sure if Chel were writing this he would apologize to the frontman, the rest of the band members, and the fans that missed out on the merchandise.

If you are interested in getting a signed copy of Eugene S Robinson's novel "A Long Slow Screw", a Dead Whale hand crafted unique 'Auk' CD, or any of the merchandise mentioned in the header, e-mail chelvanin@hydrahead.com and check out the new and improved chelvanin.com

You know usually our novelty pre-order items are enjoyable because of how wacky they are... but I can't detect an ounce of that in these super limited Jodis pillow cases! The Jodis album art, hand-drawn by our very own Aaron Turner, certainly looks and feels like something I want to rest my weary head on at the end of a day marked by sundry tribulations, wretchedness, torment, sorrow, and woe. You know how it is... And the t-shirt, well look at it! that thing fresh!

Message from Dan of CAVITY!

Hey all, Dan Gorostiaga here (a.k.a. Dan Cavity). Just wanted to inform you that I’ll be having an art show in Tokyo, Japan from October 31st (Halloween!) until December 27th. It will happen at a gallery/shop called INVADE3. The show will feature a selection of small, medium and large collage/paintings finished over this past summer.

You can check out info about the gallery and the show here (click on “Diary” for the show):
http://www.invade3.com/invade3top%20set.html

Thanks to Tetsuya and Kanke for setting up the show, and thanks to the nice folks at Hydrahead (Aaron, James, Mark, Chel, etc.) for helping me make some dreams a reality (latest Lambda print, postcard set and CAVITY shirt!).

Last thing I wanted to mention is that I’m looking for an old, working Polaroid Land camera (any of the 100 series, see information below from Wikipedia). If any of you happen to have one, get in touch with me at: kilmes1@hotmail.com I’d be willing to trade it for records or artwork, or maybe we can work out a deal. Thanks!

100 Series Pack Cameras
These cameras were developed after the rollfilm models and were designed to use the newly developed 100 series pack film. Like with the Swinger, the film sandwich was pulled out of the camera to develop outside of the camera, but instead of two separate rolls, the film was built into a compact easy loading film pack which contained 8 exposures. Hard body plastic models were marketed later a low cost alternative to the more expensive models with bellows. There are 4 generations of folding colorpack cameras the 100, the 200, the 300, and 400 series. Though pack film is still produced and used actively worldwide, Polaroid announced in 2008 the discontinuation of all of its film by 2009. Fujifilm still produces its version of Pack film which is compatible with Land pack film cameras.

Pyramids with Nadja Preorder is Up (and Running)!

As we have mentioned multiple times on this blog (and around the internet), October 27th marks the release date of the compact disc version of Pyramids with Nadja, and joint colab between Pyramids and Nadja (and a boat load of others). To kick start the celebration, our webstore is currently offering a preorder for this release that includes the (un)limited possibilities of also purchasing a t-shirt or zip-up hoodie. As an added bonus, when you order the CD you will also receive a limited Pyramids with Nadja Seed Packet, which is pretty kick ass if you ask me. It includes some perennial wildflower seeds to plant in your garden, or flower pot like the one i have on the floor by my desk (thanks Michele!, this thing won't die).

At the top of this lovely blog post is an image of the preorder. You can order it by going here.

Chel has been Keelhauled by his ladyfriend Mi-Chel-e

"You can take my video, but you can never take my e-mail" - Chel

In this 10th edition of Chel's List videos, our suety friend narrowly escapes being replaced by his better 1/3rd.

More importantly he showcases Keelhaul's vinyl 2xLP "Keelhaul's Triumphant Return to Obscurity." For those of you who are interested in purchasing this new release, it is available from chelvanin@hydrahead.com, Vacation Vinyl or our online webstore, and soon will be at your local record store. (on a side note, if you aren't seeing Hydra Head titles at your favorite retail purveyor, drop sugarbear@hydrahead.com a line and maybe he can rectify that.)

Below are some still shots of the vinyl colors and artwork.

Nihill: Grond In Stores Today!

Nihill's Grond (the second in a trilogy) is available in stores today or directly from Hydra Head Here!!

Descriptive Text:
"GROND, chapter two in a trilogy, is an album wholly immersed in abstraction. The instrumentation renders a forceful merging of massive celestial bodies, each a whirling cacophony exuding a unique sonic trembling. After digesting the lyrics in accordance, what used to sound like the swinging of a pendulum, rather depicts a birth of unintelligible base... a spectral achievement even. Nihill, an outfit still very new to the American public, travels freely from one metal sub-genre to the next. The reflexive nature with which Nihill makes these connections might lead one to consider them genreless. GROND, for example, is at once: drone, doom, noise, industrial, and black metal; arriving at something resembling a sort mechanistic dark ambient more than anything else."

Jodis "Secret House" Streaming & In Stores Today

Jodis, an entirely new outfit involving James Plotkin (Khanate, Khlyst, Phantomsmasher, O.L.D.) Aaron Turner (ISIS, Old Man Gloom, Lotus Eaters, House of Low Culture, GREYMACHINE) and Tim Wyskida (Khanate, Blind Idiot God), is available in stores today! and directly from HH here!

descriptive text:
"A modern exploration of restrained sonic minimalism and tonal/textural density. Jodis'"Secret House" as a whole, recalls a void, a shoreless pit, a slow nihilistic descent into absolute blankness... The vocals emote a deviating distress, one that the listener will walk away from also knowing. The guitars loom with an almost inconceivable image of stillness. The percussion possesses an irregular circularity facilitating the general disorientation encapsulating the mood of the record. In summation, a thorough listen would kick the living shit out of your aptitude for co-habitation with other humans"

Cave In: Steve Brodsky Interview on Punknews.org

When Cave In declared their hiatus three and a half years ago, no one knew what to expect for the quartet’s future. Everyone knows that a hiatus is more often than not a prelude to the breakup. Not so, however, for Cave In, who has just released the dynamic, raging Planets of Old on Hydra Head. Listening to it, it’s hard to believe that the band was apart for so long. The songs are as tight as ever, and the lyrics spin dark, haunting tales against the heavy, ethereal sound scape of the EP.

Big Business Karaoke Wednesday! Rickroll edition!

This week's Big Business Karaoke selection is the penultimate (second to last) in this weekly series. So before we get to the finale, here is the infamous internet meme "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, as sung by Big Business' bearded bassist, Jarred Warren. Now you can Rickroll your friends with a Big Business twist! Tell them it is a video of an attractive, scantily clad person, and delight in their chagrin when it is actually Jarred making laser sounds and doing high kicks with Toshi Kasai on tambourine.

Nihill "Grond" Preorder Launched!

On October 13th, HHR will be releasing NIHILL's Grond full length. Part two of the trilogy that started with Krach (which just saw a proper North American release via the handsome gentlemen [and lady] of HHR), Grond continues with the black metal scuzz that we can't get enough of. In honor of this release, we are offering a new shirt design which you can gander at above.

"..brutal, necro-weird black metal with a choirs-of-hell agapeness á la Deathspell Omega or Funeral Mist when they blast and make like Immortal circling above in time before time; raw industrialised Burzum-isms; Mayhem-style spoken-word schizo-grumbings; abstract ambient doom propositions. All here, and coated in a sheen of Lustmord-esque sonic filth." - Decibel Magazine

Steve, Andy, and yet another reason we love them: FLOOR boxset

Robotic Empire makes us laugh...really, we just can't take them seriously....not because of what they release (compare our rosters, we copy their asses all the time) and not because of who runs it (their teamleader Andy has been on our friends list since before we had internet access)...nope, it ain't neither of those things. It's because their birthname is Robodog...and for some strange reason they went and changed it years and years ago.

So for all you too young to know this, and for all of you too old to really care, we've got two things we want you to consider...the first being for our benefit, the second being for yours:

A) Email Lindsay and Andy and tell them Robotic Empire is a joke and that Robodog lives.

B) Go pre-order the boxset to end all boxsets...the item that made the HHR staff weak in the knees...the item that made us want to bear hug Steve and kiss Andy on the lips....the most comprehensive and excessive piece of work we've seen from an indie label in who knows how long....we're talking about the shit you see above....lots and lots and lots of a band we love more now then we did then....FLOOR.

The specs for this thing are like a 6 course meal: 10 x LP, 1 x 7", 8 x CD, 32 page booklet, exclusive shirt....or as the ad says "EVERYTHING". We want this and we already begged Andy for one. Well, we begged him for two actually.

This much Floor is a lot of Steve Brooks to take in, so we recommend you do it in spurts after you get this thing unloaded of the flatbed and wheeled into your play room...but be sure to take it from a team that knows, too much Steve is never enough. You see, we didn't really know Steve back in the Floor days...its during his more recent years fronting Torche that we started to fall for the guy....and now that we've fallen for him we just can't get enough. We certainly did know about him back when, or to be more specific, we knew about Floor way back when...they was all dirty and gross and still somehow sweet and lovely, like the fresh offspring of a pile of late 80's/early 90's bands that we're still not wise enough to name check appropriately. Lets just say Floor were pretty much kinda exactly like the sort of band you might expect a guy from Torche to maybe have cut his chops on when he was a wee metal lad floating through Florida's hardcore community. Steve wasn't the only dude in the band, but as far as we are concerned (and with no disrespect to our homies that played in Floor over the years) it was pretty much his band all along. And now, for a limited time, you can get all this Steve 'n Floor in one motherfucker of a boxset....

Way to much gushing from us, eh? Fair enough, its late and we ain't sure any of the above makes sense, so we'll shut up...here's the official word from Robodog and Floor:

FLOOR "Below & Beyond" Box Set pre-orders launched, eight previously unreleased tracks posted

It's pretty rare when a band comes along that creates something truly unique. Scarcer still are multiple standout recordings from the same group. Rarest of all is one who amasses a large body of work that varies greatly, yet consistently remains impressive.

Southern Florida's FLOOR were around for roughly 10 years and recorded well over a dozen times during their on-and-off existence. Nearly 100 tracks are the result of a decade of persistence amid overall underappreciation, and only in the wake of their demise did underground audio followers finally take note. Their huge body of work yielded only a handful of officially released records, and most of what the band recorded just collected dust in the vaults. Finally, everything ever laid down to tape by this truly ahead-of-their time(s) outfit has been compiled into one massive release.

From the living rooms and basements of 1992 to the studios of 2001/2002, FLOOR had an incredible evolution from the GODFLESH and early-MELVINS-inspired sludge worship, to the unrivaled sugary doom/pop amalgamation which would eventually pave the way for TORCHE, HOUSE OF LIGHTNING and others. The changes in sound from recording-to-recording means the sheer variation of style (and audio fidelity) witnessed throughout this collection is astounding, and when dating these recordings against what would eventually follow, it becomes crystal clear that FLOOR were consistently operating on that fabled "next level".

It is with great honor and elation that Robotic Empire is able to present the "Below & Beyond" Box Set. After many years in the making, FLOOR is finally able to conclude their existence with this extensive collection. Ten 12" LPs, one 7" EP, eight CDs and a (roughly) 32-page booklet of writings, photos, lyrics, artwork (and more) are all to be housed in separate jackets contained within a custom cloth-bound box. Each record comes on a different color of vinyl to match to the corresponding artwork, and two etchings accompany recordings that didn't have appropriate flipsides.

Robotic Empire is making 305 copies of this box set, and if the demand is there maybe more at a later date. It's hard to know what the response to this release is going to be, considering the band hasn't been active for over 5 years and had a varied fanbase during their actual existence... so 305 was the number chosen by the parties involved and 275 copies are now available to the public.

The price for FLOOR's massive "Below & Beyond" Box Set collection is $250 US. This is obviously a large amount of money, so as a way of thanking those who pre-order, an exclusive t-shirt is being included (with a design/style that's only available with this preorder). Because those purchasing this box set are spending a lot of money, Robotic Empire has built a website for those who order with the sole purpose of keeping purchasers informed on the status of the production.

A major personal thank-you is due to Anthony, Steve and Henry for braving everything that went into this, and for trusting us to finally do the band justice with this massive release. An additional thank you to everyone else who contributed as well (be it artwork, musicianship, moral support or otherwise), and to you for still being interested after all these years. Namasté!
