LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH!

It's a big week for drum machines!

GODFLESH - Decline & Fall
J K Broadrick's most-recognized band, the influential and innovative GODFLESH- who formed in 1988 with bassist Ben Green, disbanded in 2002 and reformed in 2010 - present Decline & Fall 4 brand new tracks on a 23 minute mini album.
These industrial metal titans pick up right where they left off with more pummeling beats and distortion.

THE AUSTERITY PROGRAM - Beyond Calculation
Over a decade and a half of playing together and now the band puts out their best release. The humor is much bleaker, the musical range is a lot sharper, and the drum machine is really well beyond its natural limits. It took four years to write and was put on tape over a week and a half in November 2013. They took the trouble to record it as clearly as they could so that you can listen to it at absolute top volume.
If you like Godflesh and Big Black, this will tickle your eardrums just right.

Few albums represent an individual and genre defining milestone as does the self titled debut from Justin Broadrick's Jesu. Combining the considerable sonic weight of Godflesh with brittle melancholy melodies in hypnotic long-form structures, it provided ample evidence of Broadrick's myriad capabilities as a song writer and ceaselessly creative musical innovator. While the eight tracks that comprise the album truly sound like no one else, they also hinted at previously unexplored areas of tenderness and subtlety. Though Jesu went on to mine those more harmonious aspects of its sound on subsequent releases to great effect, none rivaled the debut in its perfectly crafted mixture of beauty, heaviness, hope and despair. Much has happened since the arrival of this album, both for Broadrick as well as the musical world(s) he inhabits, but nothing has diminished the gleaming radiance of this darkened gem.

JESU items in the Hydra Head Shop

JESU titles in the Hydra Head Download Store
In 2007 Hydra Head bought some equipment for Jesu to use on their 2007 US Lifeline tour. This Marshall JCM 800 has been sitting in the hallway of Hydra Headquarters since Jesu dropped it off (along with a quarter-full tequila bottle, a beer, and a cardboard sign that read "Jesu needs weed, will trade for merch").

JKB and JCM at CMJ 2007
JCM making a grilled cheese.

JCM drinking JESU's leftover tequila (and peppers).

JCM passed out because it's a lightweight (you try drinking 4 ounces of the spiciest tequila ever tasted when you only weigh 41 pounds)

JCM reading on the john

JCM signing Lifeline posters (clinging on to the glory days)

JCM skating out front of HHQ.
JCM busting a sick kickflip.

The amp is fun to have around, making grilled cheeses, getting tanked, and skating out front, but it is time for it to get out in the world and back to work. It has been coasting on having been on tour with Jesu for almost 4 years now.

If you want to give it a good home, check out the ebay page here.
For you Apple iTunes acolytes who have pounced on Ping, Jesu is on there and actually using it very well.

In probably the best use of it we have seen, Justin Broadrick has been compiling a playlist (currently 56 songs) of music that has influenced Jesu. From Cocteau Twins to The Monkees, it is an eclectic and occasionally surprising mix.

If you use Ping, follow Jesu and even if you don't, check out the playlist. Looks like he will keep adding to it, too.

Jesu releases are available in the Hydra Head shop, Hydra Head Download store, Amazon, iTunes and wherever else you buy good music.

Jesu - Heart Ache & Dethroned

2xCD / 2xLP / Shirt now available for pre-order

Release Date: November 16th, 2010

There are few artists operative at the fringes of popular music today whose sound has not been in some way or another informed or shaped by the works of Justin K Broadrick. As a founding member or sole proprietor of seminal outfits such as Godflesh, Napalm Death, Techno Animal, and Final, Broadrick has managed to help change or even define the now widespread genres of industrial and death metal, abstracted hip hop and dub, grindcore, and ambient electronics. So is also the case with his work in Jesu, who in the course of a very productive seven year existence have taken the churning pummel of his former project Godflesh, augmented it with the textural melody of 90s shoegaze rock and spawned a new sub-genre and the inevitable legions of imitators. And while imitators may abound, as the originator of this relatively newfound musical territory Jesu is still the clearly visible leader.

For those who may only be vaguely familiar with the history and subsequent trajectory of Jesu the re-release of the debut EP, Heart Ache, may function as the most suitable starting place for the process of initial immersion and discovery. Over the span of two towering 20 minute tracks one can hear not only the smoldering remnants of Godflesh embedded in the aural tapestry, but also the foundational elements that would define the future of the Jesu lexicon - extended and hypnotic structures, overlapping multi-layered melodies, alternately harsh/beautiful sonic embellishments and a palpable sense of the human capacity to express feeling through the mode of song craft. While Heart Ache itself may be reason enough to warrant investigation by the uninitiated, the inclusion of the recently completed Dethroned EP as a part of this release gives further reason for new listeners and long time devotees to discover (or remember) why so many accolades lay heaped at the altar of Jesu. The 4 tracks from Dethroned were originally conceived and partially finished in 2004, but were only finally completed in 2010. Perhaps due to the length of time over which these tracks were created the full evolution of Jesu is apparent within their structures, fluctuating from suffocatingly heavy to delicately sparse and covering an emotional spectrum of considerable depth. While "full circle" might not be quite the appropriate term to describe the content of Dethroned there is a completeness to its statement, recalling the monuments of Jesu past while simultaneously pointing towards the ever widening path of its future.

Jesu / Envy - split

CD
and more on our webstore...

I was introduced to Jesu when they released Conqueror in 2007, and I was immediately sucked into the hazy, heavy-but-spacious ambience. The simple melodicism of Justin Broadrick’s vocals set atop gorgeously brutal stoner-metal is surprisingly accessible. Jesu knows how to properly craft an elegant pop hook and launch it into the great beyond with sheer metal destruction and patient, patient songwriting. The actual guitar parts are not overly complicated, and they allow plenty of room for Broadrick’s soft and inviting voice, but the aesthetic and execution are crushing. I can think of several bands that attempt to mesh pop simplicity with the sonics of metal, but very few actually succeed at capturing the essence of both, and none so well as Jesu.

Broadrick continues to plunge into new waters with his recent forays into electronica, and he shows no sign of slowing down. In our interview, he talks about an upcoming split, an upcoming full-length, and his experience at Primavera.

Release and Stream "Split" Out Now on Hydra Head!

Stream Envy / Jesu "Split" here!

Hydra Head proudly presents the official North American edition of Envy / Jesu's split release, out now on CD and in the fall on 2x10." Originally available exclusively via our pals from the land o' the rising sun, Daymare Recordings, this release features brand new tracks from both bands. Our boy JKB does his good deed for the day and unloads a whole pile of beats up on this piece, while Japan's Envy balance the scales with a smoothness we never knew they had up in 'em. Nice.

You can listen to the entire record streaming via Hydra Head's very fancy media player linked up above. In case we missed something, here's what our favorite Japanese counterpart had to say about this release:
