Henry & Glenn Forever Book Release Party!

Henry & Glenn Forever Book Release Party!

THIS FRIDAY! April 30th, 2010

Henry and Glenn Forever is the ridiculous idea born out of a night of too many beers shared by a group of artists who sometimes call themselves Igloo Tornado. On that night Gin Stevens said "There should be a Tom of Finland book, but with Henry and Glenn..." and Tom Neely and Scot Nobles replied: "Yes! And we're going to do it!" This bold idea (or is it a bad idea?) became a small zine that grew into a notorious legend that has now become a nice little book published by Cantankerous Titles!

Come to the book release party at
In Silverlake- 3817 W. Sunset Blvd, LA, CA.
8-10 pm

Get the book - it's only $4!
See the original art - also cheap!
Drink some drinks!

FRIDAY! FRIDAY! FRIDAY!

Win A Chance to See Austerity Program Play in Your Living Room + Other Prizes!

From The Austerity Program:

To celebrate the 5.4.10 release of our EP, Backsliders and Apostates Will Burn, we are running a contest.

What you can do (options)

1. Take a picture that illustrates a lyric from an AP song. Keep in mind that while we may be able to interpret you sitting sad in a chair as conceptually related (maybe), BIG POINTS will go to the person blowing disease into an American Legion convention.

2. Remix a song. Specifically, HH is hosting the files for Song 18 from our last record that let you mess with the bass, guitar, vocals and drums. Chop it up, mash it up, remix, add your own instruments, make it crazy. Download the song files here: www.austerityprogram.com/contest/song.htm

3. Make something else that's somehow related to what we're doing. A Youtube video of a song, or a cover of a song, or that makes fun of one of our videos? Excellent. A sonnet that’s also a palindrome? Fantastic. A .pdf of a police report from when you got arrested as some conceptual performance art that’s related to the Terra Nova EP? Uhh ... okay! Great!

Who decides?

-We have a panel of judges made up of the two of us and our friend Brian. Keep in mind that Brian is wildly creative but NOT a metal cretin so obvious stuff won’t work.

-We will only ask that you allow us to post the results on our website to share with the world. We want to reward people who are willing to do creative stuff. We’ve had a bunch of fun making this record and want you to have fun making something, too.

How do you enter?

Contest entries must be received before 12AM, June 5th (one month after the record release). Winners will be announced a few days later. Links/attachments to all entries must be sent to: contest | @ | austerityprogram | dot | com (typed in standard e-mail address).

What can you win?

- Third Prize (5): AP Merch Pack A CD of the new record and t-shirt.

- Second Prize (3) : AP Poster Pack – Four posters - Jay Ryan, Jessica Crosby (2) and the VERY FIRST AP show. All handmade.

- First Prize (Away from NYC) (2) AP Song Access – Access to a download page with links to pretty much every AP song. Includes unreleased stuff and

demos. We send you the time and the page link, you have one hour to download whatever you want. Then the link dies.

- First Prize (NYC Area) (1) : AP Show at Your Home – If you live within 100 miles of NYC, we will come to your home and play a show. Since we have a drum machine and there’s only two of us, this can be very quiet – even some lousy apartment’s kitchen can work. We just won’t bring the full setup (unless you want to get evicted, which is fine with us).

- Grand Daddy Prize (1): Cover Song – We’ll cover whatever song you want us to as best we can, taking your general instructions into account. Delivery by November 1, 2010.

Fine print!

-First, no one who’s specifically thanked (by name or direct association) on the CD is eligible for entry.

-Second, we came up with the contest and all decisions about to who and how the prizes are allocated are up to us entirely. We’ll do our best to be fair, but those with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement are being warned to stay cool. -Third, we will not give any contact information about anyone to anyone - but we will probably add you to our e-mail list if you enter (unless you ask us not to).

-Fourth, please do not submit something that makes us have to apologize to our friend that he agreed to help us - stuff that is meanspirited or hateful. Finally, no more than one prize per person. Like that’s gonna be a problem. Oh, and we may find reading all this later that we screwed something up, so we reserve the right to change things. We’ll keep things current on our website.

Good luck and have fun!

Kayo Dot: "Coyote" CD Available Now!

Release and Stream New Album, "Coyote," Today on Hydra Head!

Stream "Coyote" exclusively @ Self-Titled's new website!

Coyote, Kayo Dot's fourth studio album out today on Hydra Head, is a single, narrative-driven, long-form composition written with story and text provided by a close, terminally-ill friend of the band, Yuko Sueta, in the final stage of her life. Coyote was once again engineered by Randall Dunn (Sunn 0)), Earth, Six Organs of Admittance) in Seattle, Washington, forging a new genre of "goth fusion" which combines elements of early Cure, Faith And The Muse, and Bauhaus with Herbie Hancock's psychedelic album, Sextant, and Scott Walker's recent album, The Drift. The lyrics and story were constructed with deliberate melodrama to pay homage as well to the intended gothic vibe, expressing the protagonist's loneliness and longing to be in a better place, and her journey through her own personal looking-glass through a hallucinatory world of fear and wonder.

The musical objective this time around was to create a piece of music that uses the sonic aesthetic of this specific era of gothic art-rock integrated with a more modern-classical approach to form and architecture. To achieve this,
Kayo Dot has put together a new instrumentation, which features trumpet (provided by former Candiria trumpet player Tim Byrnes) and alto saxophone at the lead, backed up by violin, keyboards, piano, organ, bass guitar, percussion, and a pronounced lack of guitar across the album. This album also marks the return of former Kayo Dotmember, Terran Olson, whose contributions were heard on the band's 2003 debut, Choirs of the Eye, as well as with Kayo Dot's alter-ego, Maudlin of the Well. The music is also more rhythmically-driven than any previous Kayo Dot work, and being a performance-oriented composition, it was recorded mostly live (similar to 2006's Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue).Coyote also brings back some of the aggression absent from 2008's Blue Lambency Downward.

Knut: Announce New Album, "Wonder," Out June 29th on Hydra Head

There is simply too much music in the world these days, and little of it seems to embody what could be described as passion or even soul. Rarer still are the bands who have stuck around long enough to be considered consistent institutions of musical integrity and ingenuity. All but extinct are the bands that embody/possess the qualities above, and who have continued to produce, evolve and thrive despite deficient attention from the music buying public. While artists like THE MELVINS, NEUROSIS, CONVERGE and ENSLAVED have managed to plumb the depths of the various caverns of heavy metal/hardcore/loud rock and emerged atop mountains of accolades (while simultaneously making careers of their craft), KNUT have long labored in relative obscurity, churning out some of the finest all-enveloping-mathsludge- metal-pummelry known this (or that) side of the Atlantic. 16 years and 12 + releases into their existence KNUT have managed once again to top themselves and shame their peers with the creation of WONDER. A commentary on the human capacity for creative thought and numinous experience in the face of a violent and oppressive global-market ethos, WONDER stands as a testament to our will for survival and defiance in times of adversity and crippling doubt... and, yeah, it's proof-positive that CELTIC FROST and Swatch ain't the only Swiss exports from which we may all reap unending benefits.

Wonder Tracklist
1. LEET (3:20)
2. DAMNED EXTROVERTS (1:55)
3. SUCKERS (2:12)
4. CALAMITY (1:43)
5. ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKING (6:42)
6. SEGUE 1 (1:40)
7. FAST FORWARD BASTARD (3:20)
8. LEMMINGS (1:53)
9. IF WE CAN’T FLY THERE, WE’LL TAKE THE BOAT (6:33)
10. SEGUE 2 (2:12)
11. WONDER/DAILY GRIND (8:28)

Jeff and Ryo: Hydra Highlight #108

It has been quite a while since we posted a new Hydratube clip, mostly because Sugar Bear has trouble keeping up with his actual duties, and refuses to edit these for free in his personal time anymore. Also, neither Jeff or Ryo is at the office anymore, so this is clearly outdated. Also also, Wes has shorter hair and a moustache and his girlfriend will probably give him shit because she is visible in the video. This all went down during the aftermath of the Big Business Karaoke night at Vacation Vinyl, which is why Toshi is nodding along with the conversation.

Xasthur: New and Final Full Length CD "Portal of Sorrow" Available Now

"Portal of Sorrow" marks the band's final release, and the first from their own Disharmonic Variations label. The record features vocal contributions from folk singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler.

From Malefic:

This album, "Portal of Sorrow", is the last Xasthur album, period.
The honorable thing to do is to end the band and not hang around too long, like so many metal/black metal bands do. Enough is enough, right?

I'm not able to make it work anymore. I don't want to turn into one of those bands who rely on too many guests and session musicians to make people interested in their music again. Some help is fine but more than some help is very cheap and it becomes others, not the roots of the band that makes the difference and the music work. I don’t want to fall into that pattern. The motivation and inspiration used to be there full time and now it's not there at all, not for doing Xasthur at least. It is a role or persona that I have simply outgrown. I’ve been saying I’m sick and tired of it all for too long... and now, I’m going to back it up. There are or have been literally 18,000 black metal bands; it does not matter if there's one less.

Just like in the nineties, I made a few recent attempts to put a real line-up together and it still failed; another sign that said “give it up already.”

However, I wanted to end on a better note with this 'Portal of Sorrow' album because the album that came before it, 'All reflections drained', was not up to par and I couldn't finish up with an album that I was less than satisfied with. Now, I suppose any or all goals have been reached and there is nothing more I wish to try with Xasthur and it's time to move on...

Drowningman: "Busy Signal at the Suicide Hotline" on Itunes

So this release came out way before my being employed at Hydra Head and since I've been here I have come across very few physical copies of the thing... so I figured the least we could do was make it available digitally.. and so, as of today, it is so. Enjoy!
