HYDRA HEAD RECORDS

Splitting Heads since 1995

Oxbow have several shows coming up next week...

Thursday, SEPT 7th at The Knockout in San Francisco, CA.
Oxbow, Genghis Tron, The Flying Luttenbachers, The Mall

Friday, SEPT 8th at The Stork Club in San Francisco, CA.
Oxbow, Genghis Tron, Totimoshi

What do you get when you work an intern so hard that he loses focus by the end of the day? You get something he leaves behind in a flustered rush out the door to make it to the post office on time. You then take that thing he left behind, something he needs almost everyday, you wrap it in tape, then put it in a condom, then put it in an LP sleeve and blow it up, and then wrap it in more tape. then you have Tits McGhee take pictures of it as it all happens (ps: she asked for the name). Dupey is the non-emotional intern that was delivered here from god. You can see his mug covered in blood on a previous post. His counter part, the emo one, missed out on all the fun because he just had to get away from all the stress of not living at home and not having to be in high school anymore. On a plus note for Drooley, his mom did stock up his new pad with Chips Ahoy lunchables and "Paradise Destiny" Capri Sun. (Wes, one of the paid nut jobs here made note of the fresh provisions...)

If you can guess what is in the tape/condom/LP sleeve/tape before we ignore Dupey's call again, you will win something that has yet to be determined. We really will send something though, but make note, it just won't be very cool. But then again, it could be a copy of the new Pelican 2xLP gatefold record which arrives here on Wednesday...

Email bryce@hydrahead.com with your guesses.

Pelican is going on tour in late September and most of October through the South, West Coast, and Canada. The Canadian portion of the tour is sponsored by a rad Canadian weekly. The tour up there is called Exclaim! Aggressive Tendencies Tour. The dates can be found on their website or their myspace. But here's a CMJ.com write up that sums their fall plans up well:

This fall, Pelican will unveil new material from their third, as-yet-untitled release on a North American tour. Chicagos most versatile prog-metal instrumentalists will play with Daughters on the second leg of their fall Hell Songs trek, while further supporting 2005s acclaimed Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw. And in addition to the new LP, Pelican will descend in November with the weighty simultaneous release of a live DVD/3-inch CD/2XLP/12-inch.

With all these ambitious projects ahead, Pelican is bringing in some high-profile fans to assist. A Prefuse 73 remix will be released on the 3-inch CD and the 12-inch, while the live DVD features a headlining show in London that was mixed by Justin Broadrick of Jesu. The 2XLP contains the full audio of the same show. According to Pelican's label, Hydra Head, the band is likely to begin recording after the tour.

While youre at it check out some Pelican live footage and an interview done by the fine people over at www.liveeyetv.org

Providence RI's Daughters kicked off a US tour this past week in support of their new record, Hell Songs, which has expanded their minds and abilities, introducing unholy and outrageous new elements to their sound, leaving behind whatever could be considered typical within their genre. At times sounding like label-mates Oxbow or cult-legends Arab-on-Radar (on steroids), “Hell Songs” hits like a Mac Truck, pummeling its listener in a way that is, to-date, unmatched. If you havent already picked this monster up, you can do so now in the Hydra Head Online Store.

With tremendous respect and admiration, Hydra Head Industries is proud to release the work of one of the underground black metal scenes most creative minds: Xasthur. For this release, we are working in association with Battle Kommand Records. The Illinois-based label has released an impressive stable of quality underground releases, including a Xasthur/Leviathan split. Subliminal Genocide adheres to the sonic and lyrics principles of malevolence contained in Xasthurs past work, but further develops the use space and atmosphere. Though the significance and appeal of underground black metal remains largely experienced only by the few who dwell in dark corners, we hope this tremendous Xasthur record reaches the ears of all those who are even slightly fond of extreme art.

On September 12th, Hydra Head wil release the new full length album from Xasthur, "Subliminal Genocide". From now untill the release date, you can now pre-order the CD to be shipped to you the week of September 12th*. In addition, we are offering the option of a limited edition t-shirt, made especially in conjunction with the new record. Adding the shirt is entirely optional, and the shirt will only be available to purchase until August 31st, never to be printed again. This is a standard, 50 cotton/50 polyester blend black t-shirt, featuring a front a back print.

What could we say that would adequately describe this malignant aural formation? Nothing that really comes close to the actuality of the sound, so we'll stick with the facts - or some variation there of. Khlyst is the brainchild of James Plotkin and Runhild Gammelsaeter -- the album at hand being a manifestation of a long distance musical romance conceived and executed at various studios (Oslo, Norway and NY, NY) between 2004 and 2005. Mr. Plotkin is probably familiar to many of you due to his work with/as Phantomsmasher, Khanate, Scorn, Lotus Eaters, O.L.D., as a solo artist, and a myriad of other musical projects spanning numerous genres and multiple decades. Mrs. Gammelsaeter is also an accomplished cult musician, having participated in the short lived but much beloved Thorr's Hammer, along with Stephen O'Malley (sunno))), Khanate, etc.) and others.

while you might be able to picture what such a pairing might sound like, even such a mental fabrication couldn't prepare you for the contents of the forthcoming "Chaos is My Name" - the CD version of which is due out on Hydra Head on Oct. 24th, with the vinyl version to follow shortly there after. While the initial groundwork of the album was built upon spontaneous improvisation, and a lot of its power is derived from that sense of freedom and unadulterated creative blood flow, it is clear after multiple listens that this project is anything but thrown together. After laying down the initial outpourings, Plotkin painstakingly reconstructed the disparate bits and pieces into a towering and carefully crafted beast that alternates between vicious bursts of howling violence, and placid but unsettling passages of "ambient" textures. For those that cannot imagine what anything sounds like without hearing other band names being mentioned, think of what Abruptum might have sounded like had Brian Eno produced their earlier works - though even this comparison is belittling considering the ingenuity and inventiveness of this project.

The album is made up of eight tracks, all of which work as individual pieces; however it is best absorbed as one continuous piece that is merely divided into eight movements, with many elements that recede and return repeatedly, giving the album an almost labyrinthine character .... it is certainly music to get lost in.

To cap it all off "Chaos is My Name" will feature cover and interior art by Stephen Kasner (www.stephenkasner.com) and Runhild Gammelsaeter, all of which is highly complimentary and fitting for the music it houses.

See this guy right here. He is the only one to make it past first round intern eliminations. He is currently bathing in a sea of free shit, compliments from the hottest bands in the world and lunch time antics (P.S. We paid for his shit today, Vegan YO!). Take a moment, ask yourself the following questions.. Am I reliable like Duey? Can I take flatulents like Duey? Can I show up on time at least two days a week like Duey? Can I not leave early every other day like Duey? If you answered yes, please feel free to take Duey on for the intern crown.

Intern duties can consist of pretty much just about anything. Expect to participate in some of the following actions: preparing various mailings (press, tour, retail), calling stores, running errands, laughing at our bad jokes, straightening up the office, folding t-shirts, arranging tour ticket buys, web related tasks, etc..

Things that increase your chances of being involved:
-you must live near the 90029 zip code and have a car.
-we prefer college students that can obtain credit through the internship
although we are open to anyone.
-we expect some familiarity with our artists and the label.
-a passion about working in the music industry, and more importantly, with
an independent record label
-familiarity with Word, Excel, Outlook, telephones and the internet is
preferable.
-an understanding that this is not all fun and games, and if you commit to
helping out then we expect you to actually be of help.
-your hours of availability may be flexible as long as you are consistent
and someone we can count on. We are generally here from 9am to 7pm M-F
(occasionally on weekends too).

If you think you fit, email bryce@hydrahead.com and tell him why..

The HydraHead Family just got a little bigger... Congrats to Justin Foley from The Austerity Program, and his wife Jill on the birth of a healthy baby boy named Max. Now, if only Justin can keep max away from the HHR gang, he might turn out OK.....

"The band manages to express musically in a short timespan what many bands of this genre don't in their entire career." - Lambgoat

As if the shirt designs were not sweet enough, now you can grab a matching poster, from the recent Pelican/Mono tour for your wall over at the shop.

There are eight different colors, each representing a different element. Because we had a small amount leftover, and this tour was in the U.S. and Canada only, we wanted to make them available worldwide. The Delicious Design League are responsible for these designs (as well as the poster printing)
